December 2003 Trip on the Mudlick Trail

Greg E. and John R. decided to burn off their Christmas meals by hiking a portion of the Mudlick Trail in Sam A Baker State Park.  While this isn't officially part of the Ozark Trail system, it's possible that a future St. Francis section of the trail between the Wappapello and Marble Creek could use part of the existing Mudlick Trail.

The trail includes an outer 12-mile loop with various inner loops and side-trails.  Greg & John opted for a route that took in the scenic "Shut-Ins Trail," the fabulous Mudlick Hollow, and a visit to the tower. They spent more time talking than taking pictures, and promise to visit again with extra film.

The 9-mile trek began at the trailhead next to the bridge, then went counter-clockwise.  Some bushwhacking at the top of Mudlick Hollow to Logan Creek went through some nice bottomland forests and open fields.

This is one of two CCC shelters built in the 1930's.

Mudlick Hollow - a fabulous place.

One of the many small waterfalls in Mudlick Hollow.

Mudlick Hollow is full of small pools amidst boulders.

This is probably a great place to take a summer swim.

The upper end of Mudlick Hollow opens up to a mossy brook

Greg pauses for a quick rest.

The interesting branches of a Winged Elm.

This trail has the coolest trail markers-- little maps with 'you are here' notations.

The registration box is a modified ammo box!
