| This route is complete. Most of the
route was flagged in February of 2002 and a descent completed in
August. From
Highway 49, the trail makes a quick right, then crosses a utility
right-of-way before beginning the descent to the valley
below. The original route was just off the ridge-top until
it reached the ridge end, then had several switchbacks on the
final descent. We decided to bring the trail lower and
quicker to avoid the switches and bring the trail closer to the
South hollow, which produces a very picturesque and more
aesthetically pleasing route. The new route is more
difficult to build, but will yield a better trail.
After descending on the North slope of the hollow though
multiple gullies, the trail rounds the ridge-end, crosses through
a gully and then has one switchback on its way to the valley and intermittent creek below.
The first portion of this subsection has a gentle grade, but as we
approach the ridge-end it hovers at 8-10% until it reaches the
valley. After crossing the creek, the
trail hugs the creek to offer some nice water views while passing occasionally
through some pine stands.
When the trail reaches Henderson Creek, it makes a quick right
through another pine stand which has a great view of the creek
below and has good camping sites. At the moment, this
portion of the creek has been dammed by beavers. Here are
pictures we took of the dams.
UPDATE: 8/21/02-- the area from Highway 49 to the first creek
crossing has been scheduled for a timber sale to remove black/red
oak. The sale is scheduled for November 2002 and the cut
anticipated in 2003. We will attempt to construct the trail
before the sale; if successful, we will ask that a clause be
attached to the timber contract to protect the existing trail.
