Maps
A good trail and a good map go hand-in-hand.
The Department of Natural Resources has brochures with maps
available for almost all of the sections of the Ozark Trail.
However, some of the maps are slightly out-of-date, and some routes
are approximate. To fill in the gaps and create up-to-date
maps, the OTA is traveling the entire length of the trail this
year with GPS receivers to create accurate maps of the
entire Ozark Trail. On this page you'll find maps for all
trail sections in a several printing formats. Instructions on
downloading and
printing
these maps can be found at the bottom of this page.
Downloading and printing maps is not recommended for novice computer
users.
You can also the contact the Division of State
Parks at moparks@dnr.mo.gov for section maps.
Provide your postal address and map request in your email and they
will mail you the requested brochures. Not all trail section have
OT brochures.
Selecting the Right File for Printing
First, locate your desired trail section in the
table below. Next, decide if you'd like the map grid in UTM or
degrees-minutes-seconds format (UTM is better suited for GPS
users). Finally, click on the file which corresponds to the
section and format you'd like to download. Save the file to
your local disk, then uncompress the zip file. Each zip file
contains between 3-6 image files formatted to print on 8.5 x 11
paper, plus an area map. File names that end in a
"P" should be printed in 'portrait mode', and names that
end in "L" should be printed landscape. We
have also included two additional map formats for each
section. Each section is available as a single very large
image that you can manipulate yourself. This format is too
large to print, so select a printable map set if you want hardcopy
maps. The last format included is an area map showing major
roads and towns along the trail section.
NOTE: These files are large! If you
have a modem connection, please allow 10-30 minutes or more per file.

NOTE: Some Routes Are Approximate!
We have GPS'd over half of the trail, and you'll
find most of the maps fairly accurate. However, some of the
routes are approximate, especially the North Fork, Victory, and
Wappapello sections. We will be updating maps as new data is
received. If you have any questions about a map set, or any
problems download/printing, please email us
!
Each file available for download has a
description and a link to the specific map, or a link to a 'Zip
file' all maps for the trail section in the specified page layout
(Windows users who don't have an 'unzipping' program can obtain one
at this site).
When you click on the link to the map file, one of two things will
happen: Zip files should automatically download, and
single-page image files should appear in a new browser window.
To save image files to your hard disk, Windows Internet Explorer
users should follow the following instructions:
-
Using your mouse pointer, right mouse click on the
image file that you are
trying to download and click on Save Picture As... from the context
menu. (Note: you can simply right click on the links on this page
and do a Save Link As... if you prefer.)
-
When the Save As... box appears, click on the drop down menu arrow
for the Save in: field and change the location to point towards the
folder or location of your choice (you will need to remember the
location later). At the bottom of the Save As... window, take note
of the name of the filename in the File Name: field
-
Click on the Save button to save the file to your computer.
-
Once the download begins, a Saving Location status window will
appear showing how far the download has progressed.
-
Once the download is finished, the Saving Location status window
will disappear.
Using your Windows Explorer or File Manager, go to the folder or
location that you saved the file to and double click the file to
open it.
Saving files browsers other than Internet
Explorer or on an operating system other than Windows will follow a
similar procedure. If you have any questions or problems downloading
a map, please
email us for support.
Route maps have been pre-sized for printing to
standard color printers on 8.5"
by 11" paper. Some of the maps are formatted to print in
portrait mode (taller than wide), while others are formatted for
landscape (wider than tall). File names that end in
"P" are portrait; a file name that ends in "L"
is landscape. There
are several ways to print a file after you've downloaded it.
If you have image processing software (such as PhotoShop), simply
open the file and print it! You can also use a standard
'paint' program for the same purpose, such as Microsoft
Paintbrush. I've you've opened an image file via your browser,
we recommend you save the file and use another program rather than
selecting "Print" option from the "File" menu,
as this often results in formatting problems.
The most important thing about printing is to make sure your page
layout is set for the image you are printing. You should select the "Page Layout" menu
item when printing to make sure your paper orientation matches the
map. (Note: page layout options vary from printer to
printer, and application to application-- so we haven't listed the
alternatives here. If you need help, please
email us.) We
print our maps on both sides of National Geographic
Adventure Paper, which is durable and waterproof. It is
available in may outfitter stores and online.
