Karkaghne Construction Outing
We will meet at 8:45 a.m. on the south side of
Highway 32 at the intersection of Highway DD under the power lines.
This will give us time to gather our boots, water, packs and tools
so we can leave promptly at 9 a.m. We sometimes move the
vehicles to a parking area on the east side of Highway DD, about 100
yards north of 32 (see Map #2). If you arrive late, please
check the windshield of the white Toyota pickup truck for
last-minute instructions. We normally take a half-hour lunch
about noon, and work until 3pm (well, sometimes we quit at 2pm if
we're really beat).
Work Activities
We are constructing new trail on the Karkaghne
Section of the Ozark Trail. This subsection has been
roughed-in with a SWECO trail dozer (orange route on map), and our crew will
be clearing the trail corridor of limbs, digging out stumps,
grubbing backslope, finishing tread, and smoothing downslope.
There is a job for everyone, no matter your size, shape or
experience. Please remember the following:
- Safety first - be careful with tools and be aware of workers
around you
- Wear loose layered clothing, sturdy boots and gloves
- Bring and drink plenty of water
- Notify the Crew Leader if you are leaving early
- You're responsible for your own food
Directions
The intersection of Highways 32 & DD is about
7-8 miles west of Highway 21 and about 7-10 miles east of Bixby.
We have provided two maps below to help you find your way-- the
first is a general overview, and the second shows the immediate area
around the meeting place.
