Mystery dug out. Courtois 4

Postby Jimemeyer » Mon Dec 04, 2017 8:24 am

Hiked Courtois 4 last week. This heads south from Hiway 8 near Berryman. At 3.8 miles south of hiway, there is an intricate dug-out shelter on side of bluff. It is not just a cave, but a man made shelter within the bluff face, with support beam and smooth floor. It can only be seen in fall / winter when trees are bare. Does anyone know why and when this was built? It overlooks a small creek, and I noticed some old tin cup remnants. Could this have been mining shelter? Or, our own Blair Witch house?

The area is rich with history.

That is most likely a root cellar or sorts. Here is some cool reading on the area.

I believe it's a storm cellar. I've hiked past it a couple of times. There is another one by highway 8 as you're hiking towards Berryman campground. It's on the left side of the trail.
