Hwy A to Taum Sauk Mountain

Postby Hangin'Yankee » Sun Oct 22, 2017 3:29 pm

Hello OT hikers,

I'm planning on backpacking this section later this week.

I'm wondering what the water situation is?

Is there water in the Walker Branch? Is Mina Sauk Falls and Taum Sauk Creek running?

I'm up in Iowa so I don't know if it's been wet or dry down there?

I've hiked this section before and there was always plenty of water.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, we're looking for a shuttle from Taum Sauk State Park to HWY A on Thursday morning. If you know of anbody, please let me know.

Thanks,

Randy

I can't speak as to Walker Branch but as dry as it has been here, I would imagine its sketchy at best. My wife and I hiked Hwy 21 to the scour in early September and Claybaugh Creek and Taum Sauk Creek had plenty of small pools to filter from. Very small stream over Mina Sauk Falls, hence the small pools in Taum Sauk. After that back to the scour was bone dry of course. Back in May when I did Bell Mtn to Goggins Mtn and back, there was water flowing at a trickle in the small pool before Hwy A and it had been really dry leading up to that but I suspect at that point you wouldn't be needing it anyway.

We used Franklin Floats for our shuttle in September.
