Taum Sauk trail questions

Postby osusteveb » Mon Mar 27, 2017 9:59 pm

5 friends from 4 different states (Tx Ok Ne Md) are converging to do the Taum Sauk portion of the OT in early May. So two questions.

1. Starting from hwy 21 should we end at the Johnson Shutin trail head or the hwy N trailhead. We definitly want to cool off in the pools but if the hike is better we can drive to them.

2. Is 2 full and one half day about the right amount of time to do the trip? We are all in ok shape but fairly new to backpacking.

Thanks in advance for your help

1) I am not sure you can leave a vehicle at the JSI TH as they lock the gates. You might want to check with the JSI State Park folks. Hwy N is close enough though. Either way I am sure by the time you make it to the area you will be done walking the rocks and ready for a soak.

2) Walking pace is slower on the Taum Sauk than most trails due to the rocky tread and hills.

3) Don't over pack! Keep your pack weight down, share gear (cooking, water filter, shelter).

Happy Trails!

I have parked at JSI overnight recently and several times in the past without issues.
