Best 2 day 1 night

Postby dkf1979 » Sun Mar 26, 2017 7:47 pm

My wife and I are going to do an overnighter very soon. Whats the best section for a 2 day 1 night hike not requiring a shuttle? We've done theTaum Sauk/ Mina Sauk/ Devils Tollgate trail and loved that area.
Looking at Google maps it looks like there is a paved trail from Goggins Mt TH to Johnson Shut Inns TH. Thought about starting at one end or the other and doing the goggins loop and Johnson Shut Inn area. But is it easy enough to hike from one TH to the other afterwards?
Also the Current River section-Blue Spring, Klepzig Mill, Rocky falls has always interested me for some reason. Bell mountain is on the list to. Water at Bell always discourages me.
What are your suggestions?
Looking forward to hearing from you!

1) Bell Mtn is a great two one night easy does it trip. Best for catching Sunrise or a Full Moon after sunset. I have never had much issue with running out of water on this trip. There are not any refil locations so I just make sure to top off a 100 oz camelbak, and if it's warm out I will add another 30-50 oz to the pack. Plan your meals accordingly so as not to need much for cooking.

2) Googins to JSI Loop. Correct there is a paved trail from JSI to JSI campground. JSI has a connector to the OT. and OT to Goggins for the loop. As you have done Taum Sauk then you know the rocky trail conditions. I would do this loop counter clockwise and start at JSI campground. (Showers, flush toilets, and campground store - seasonal) http://ozarktrail.com/maps/detailed/TaumSauk2.jpg

3) Current River section - out n back - Stegal Mtn - Rocky Falls to Klepzig Mill and back. Parking at the trailhead in Peck ranch. Several camp spots along the way. This is a great spring/fall trip.

4) Berryman Trail - 25 mile loop. http://ozarktrail.com/maps/detailed/Courtois3.jpg

5) Council Bluff Lake - 13 mile loop - Shorter distance but a great easy hike with lake views for 90%. http://ozarktrail.com/maps/detailed/TraceCreek2.jpg

6) My personal favorite - Hike n float http://ozarktrail.com/planner/tripresultsoverview.php?id=356&activitytypeid=1 Park at either Ozark Outdoors or the Courtois Northern Terminus (Bridge over Meremac River at Onodoga Cave)
Hike Southbound to Bluff overlooking Huzzah Creek (7.5 milesish) Camp the finish the 4 miles to Bass River Resort and rent a canoe to float back to your car. (maybe 6 hours) I typically camp one night on the river.

Jim, thanks for the information! Stegal Mtn to Powder Mill looks like a great hike. Lookout tower, Rocky Falls, Klepzig Mill, and Blue Spring all sound great. Do you have any idea of shuttle options in that area?

Shuttles are very limited on the OT...not to mention $$$ I would do it as an out n back from Stegal Tower area to Klepzig... there is a campsite just north of Klepzig Mill. If it's your first time the area is worth the second look going back on the trail. North of Klepzig to Powder Mill didn't seem that impressive to me...but I was whipped as we started at Big Spring.

Out n back improves options on seeing the wild horses between Klepzig and Rocky Falls, even better is the option on spotting some Elk near Peck.

Johnson Shut Ins does shuttles in that area, Points south of Peck you could hit up one of the canoe shuttles. ...but the price puts it out of my comfort zone, when what I really went after was walking in the woods.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help Jim! After posting my question, I found 2 Rivers Canoe rental through a search on the forums. They quoted me $70 to shuttle from Powder Mill to Peck Ranch. For a point to point hike, we either need a shuttle or a second vehicle. And due to the miles from home to the area, a shuttle wouldn't be much more expensive.
We've decided to spend a night at Powder Mill campground, shuttle to Peck Ranch TH in the morning, then hike back to Powder Mill. 2 days and 1 night hiking 14 miles should provide ample opportunity to explore the area along our way hopefully. We're hoping to find a nice camp site near Klepzig to spend the night.
Again, thanks for your help!

Love what adding music to video clips does. Should have spent a little time on editing. But non the less, music makes the scene.
Short video of a 20 mile overnight trip we did on the ozark trail. We arrived at powder mill campsite at 830pm friday and set up camp in the dark. Then we had 2 rivers canoe rental shuttle us the next morning to peck ranch. About a 30 minute ride. Then we hiked back to our vehicle.
We're new to backpacking so we're completely satisfied with doing the 20 miles. Especially with our budget gear!
