Need backpack camping advice on Current River section

Postby jeffozt » Wed Mar 15, 2017 10:31 pm

We (5 in our party) will be heading down the Current River section from Powder Mill to Rocky Falls and then back, starting on Saturday, March 25th. This is our first time on the OT trail and we need some backpack camp advice.

1) Is there a decent place to backpack camp where Indian Creek pours into the Current or should we hike up Indian Creek?

2) Is there a decent place to backpack camp at Buzzard Shut Ins? Can you camp there? If not there, at or around Klepzip Mill?

Thanks to all in advance!

Yes. There is at least one campsite at near each of those locations minus Indian Creek...(I can't remember that spot) I have attached some maps and google maps sat image links.

Klepzig had the coolest looking site...on the north side of the the mill/creek crossing. Approx Google Maps --> https://www.google.com/maps/place/37%C2%B007'38.7%22N+91%C2%B011'52.7%22W/@37.127423,-91.2001617,904m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d37.127423!4d-91.197973?hl=en&authuser=0
Rocky Falls had one near the intersection of the main trail and the spur to the falls. Point B on this map - http://ozarktrail.com/maps/detailed/CurrentRiver2.jpg
Buzzard shut-ins - There was a fire ring near a field (saw the horses there) the trail follows a fenceline around to the south of the field.(this site would be east/north of the shutins area. If you have it in your legs I would hike up to Stegal for the view. Google maps --> https://www.google.com/maps/place/37%C2%B007'12.4%22N+91%C2%B012'03.5%22W/@37.1200395,-91.2010817,906m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d37.120116!4d-91.200959?hl=en&authuser=0

I would consider starting at Stegal and and hiking to Klepzig and back. This Map Point D or use the trailhead...but the southern climb up Stegal is a goat trail and tought to follow. http://ozarktrail.com/maps/detailed/CurrentRiver2.jpg

From Powder Mill to Klepzig was a umm... boring, steep, not as fun. But Hey that was the end of a long trip from Big Spring. ...

There is a firetower on Stegal, I think you can park there and hike down the ridge to the Southern vista on Stegal mtn and then head north. Google Maps --> https://www.google.com/maps/place/37%C2%B004'36.4%22N+91%C2%B011'55.6%22W/@37.0784971,-91.2001996,146m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d37.076765!4d-91.19878
