Not what I had planned for the previous week but a nice little outing anyway. Mina Sauk was roaring after all the rain. Lot's of folks on the trail. Here is a link that details the weekend along with some pictures:

Great pics and report! The creeks were really rolling around here last weekend! I believe that cave along Shut-In creek is actually an old mining prospect, and it goes back about 150' before dead-ending. I packed in some muck boots a few years ago and went in there. The water stays about a foot deep the whole way.

There is a huge swarm of quartz and feldspar veins (up to 6" wide) in the rock there (unlike anything else I've seen in the St. Francois Mountains), along Shut-In Creek and that bluff, and some early prospector must have been looking for precious metals and sunk the shaft into the side of Bell Mountains.

DRR,

I had a feeling it was a mine shaft, the size was just too consistent and jagged to be a cave. What threw me was there was no sign of drilling, least wise any I could see. Looks like another trip with some boots will be required to do some further inspecting.

Very nice photos - Bell mountain offers the best views.

After climbing down Bell Mountain, approximately how far did you follow Shut In Creek and how far was the cave? Did you also see a old jeep trail that followed the creek and crossed it now and then?

I believe you would have eventually came upon CR 2396 if you hiked far enough.

Thanks - N3870v

n3870v,

I think we went close to a mile downstream. The mine/cave was a little over half the distance we hiked. After we passed the bluff where the mine was we picked up the old road bed. It looked like it crossed the creek to the east side just downstream of the bluff. I didn't see anything that looked like a road bed north of the bluff on the west side of the creek, leastwise that I recall. I didn't have my GPS with me and was going strictly by contour lines on the map and I'm pretty certain we were very close to the north and south boundaries of the wilderness in the creek bottom.
