Bell Mountain to Barton Fen - Again

This trip was absolutely amazing. I did this same trip solo back in May, and what a difference four months can make. My daughter accompanied me on this trip during Oct 9-11. The weather was amazing: 70’s during the days and 50’s at night; it doesn’t get any better than this.

Spent the nights at Peter Cave Hollow and Wolf Pen Hollow. Herp life was different this trip. We saw no snakes, only two box turtles, and lots of Eastern collared lizards. No ticks or mosquitos, but I did get a case of chiggers. No noisy whippoorwills at night, only frogs, crickets, owls, and the babbling creeks.
We didn’t quite get the peak color for fall, but it was still wonderful. Every slight breeze would be followed by the sound of falling hickory nuts, acorns, or black walnuts hitting the ground. Squirrels and chipmunks were busy rustling through the leaves and gathering their winter supply.

The fall wildflowers were numerous, especially the white and purple asters. The previously burned area about 1 mile before Wolf Pen Hollow is full of Elderberry and a type Baccharis Halimifolia. The Baccharis is growing very well, and varied from 4-12 feet tall. The plants were in the process of shedding the flower heads which made it look like it was snowing. It was very unusual and picturesque.

We came across a pair of hikers, Danny and Erika who had already set up camp at Wolf Pen Hollow. They graciously allowed us to set up our camp there for the night too. We talked around the camp fire and had a good time sharing our backgrounds. Turns out that Danny and my daughter are both graduates with Forestry majors. The two are attempting a 150 mile Ozark Trail trip and I hope they post a trip report here after their long adventure. Good luck!

One item of concern for the future of the Ozark Trail System are the Feral Hogs. We came across a sounder of Feral Hogs at Panther Creek. They did not show aggression towards us and thankfully ran away as we walked by. Hog damage in the lower creek areas is extensive. We were amazed by the rutting damage that they have created in the lowlands. Panther Creek wasn’t the only area that showed rutting damage.

And to make a great hike even better, we finished the trip with lunch at the Bixby Country Store, located at Barton Fen. Seriously, if you have never stopped in at this place, you need too. It was a perfect ending to a perfect trip.

Hope you enjoy the pics.
