Trace Creek going north to Hazel Creek

A friend and myself did a northbound overnight between 32/DD trailhead to Hazel Creek campground. Overall the trail was in excellent shape. On the southern stretch we found a couple downed trees that were a pain but apart from those it was clear. It was also the first time we had seen another human on the trail in the sections we have done. Saw 7 horses (turns out it was an endurance race weekend) and 2 pair of bikers. The bikes both seemed to be doing an out and back from Council Bluffs lake. At the DD connector someone who goes by Hiker Russ had left some trail magic. I was excited to see it even though we did not personally take anything. Ok well, my hiking partner took an instant coffee. You are awesome Hiker Russ, big shout out to you! I plan on stopping by that spot next time I am through and dropping some things off if the cooler is still there.

Stayed the night down in the valley by Trace Creek. I was suprised not to see any sort of established camp as I have seen in other places. No real big deal (though we found the bit of a camp about 1/4 mile past the creek at the homestead chimney the next morning) as we were using hammocks and just found a quiet spot that we could use. Hiked the last 7 miles sunday morning and were wiped after. Relatively new to hiking so 17.5 miles is my longest stint yet. We had a blast and besides the heat it was a good time.

I cut some wood on Friday near the chimney while hunting a down tree to remove. Established camp sites are far and few on the OT. On occasion if you cross a Forest Road and walk it a 1/4 mile or so you will find a fire pit. (Deer Camps)

Any chance you can recall where those down trees were located?

As for the trail angel box... great idea... just don't leave food in it. We have Black Bears and Trash panda's oops (raccoons) in Missouri...we don't need to feed them or giving them a reason to hang out waiting for more.

Glad to hear that trail magic is alive and well on the OT! I would try to supply some myself, but I have yet to see any other people on the trail when we've gone out (mainly near/around Hwy P and Sutton's Bluff). If I knew it would be found by people and not animals, I would leave some or even set up to grill out for folks as they come through.

If I remember correctly they were between DD and the lake spur intersection. At most they were between DD and the DD/32 trailhead. I think I remember seeing 2 of them.

I kind of wish the cooler they used had a locking lid on it for that reason.
