I'm hiking the trail from Tom Sauk to Barton Fen and back. How are trail conditions along there? Should I be planning on some extra water? It's been dry lately, so wondering what I should plan for on water supply.

Taum Sauk Mtn to Barton Fen? Taum Sauk to Johnson Shutins...low chances of finding water at this time until you get to the black river. JSI North through Hwy A = Padfield branch should have some and Ottery Creek at Hwy A will have water. Next chance....Just a few hundred yards north of the Middle Fork Trace Creek turn is the Big River...(its a tiny creek but usually has some year round water.

South on Middle Fork several places to get water. be ware some of the streams on the Middle Fork originate or pass through Mine Tailings lakes... I wouldn't drink it.

An hour or so pre hike caching water jugs at the major road crossings would be worth the time investments....Summer has been very dry.

Check out these maps for water options. Sections Taum Sauk, Trace Creek, and Middle Fork.
