What is a Land Steward?

Land Stewards (or Land Managers) are responsible for building and maintaining the portion of the Ozark Trail that passes through their land.

While we like to think of the Ozark Trail as a single trail, it can also be considered a series of linked trails coordinated by the Ozark Trail Council.  These "link trails" fall on land owned or managed by different groups, each of which have their own standards for land use, and each of which are ultimately responsible for the trail that crosses their land.

Land Steward reports appear monthly on this site.  Contact us if you think the reports are incorrect; contact the Land Steward to report trail problems (or just to tell them how much you liked their trail!)

The Ozark Trail Council

Established in 1977 by a group of public land managers, trail users and private landowners, this group created the "Ozark Trail Concept."

The purpose of the Council is to promote the Ozark Trail; to establish guidelines for its construction, maintenance, marking, and mapping; to publicize the trail; and generally to provide an organizational framework within which all matters relating to the Ozark Trail in Missouri can be discussed and resolved.
